Former Yanukovych-era official Portnov shot dead in Madrid

Former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov was shot dead near an American school in Madrid, Reuters reports, citing a source close to the investigation.

"An unidentified gunman or gunmen shot and killed former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov on Wednesday morning outside a school in a wealthy suburb of Madrid," Reuters reported on its website on Wednesday.

According to the report, police received information about the shooting at 9:15 a.m. (07:15 GMT) local time. However, Madrid police did not name the victim.

Reuters also reports that radio station Cadena SER reported that the man was taking his children to school when he was shot.

Politician and lawyer Andriy Portnov (born 1973) was a member of parliament of Ukraine of the V-VI convocations (2006-2007, 2007-2010). In April 2010 - February 2014 – he served as the head of the Main Directorate for Judicial Affairs of the Presidential Administration of Viktor Yanukovych and deputy (since January 24, 2014, first deputy) head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine.

Since December 2021, Portnov has been under US sanctions for influencing the courts. According to journalists from the Skhemy (Schemes) TV program, Portnov left Ukraine in June 2022.

A 52-year-old man died early Wednesday morning after being shot several times in front of an educational center in the Madrid town of Pozuelo de Alarcón, the exclusive American School, police sources told El País. The man is Ukrainian lawyer Andriy Portnov, a former adviser to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych who is under investigation for corruption. The victim was shot five times by two or three criminals. The school does not know whether he was the father of one of the students.
